ABOUT

I’m the author of Thirty BelowThe Harrowing and Heroic Story of the First All-Women’s Ascent of Denali, forthcoming March 2025; and The Hard Parts with Oksana Masters, which won the National Library Association Award, the Christopher Award, and was named one of the best sports books of the year by The Times.

My stories have appeared in Rolling Stone, National Geographic, The New York Times, TIME, Politico, Atavist, Outside, and Men’s Journal, among others, and I’m an adventure travel columnist on Forbes. My work has been awarded the Lowell Thomas Gold Medal in Adventure Writing, short listed for the True Story Award, and included in The Year’s Best Sports Writing series.

My environmental work includes stories on:

  • the Colorado River’s miraculous self-restoration after humans destroyed it,

  • New Mexico’s attempt to privatize public rivers,

  • how wolves are political pawns in the culture wars,

  • and the Blackfeet Nation’s bid to defend their sacred land from the Bureau of Land Management director.

My work in the adventure sphere includes stories on:

  • evolving models of motherhood in high-risk mountain careers;

  • the partners behind heralded accomplishments like the Dawn Wall and the first solo Antarctica crossing;

  • examining the impact of the rise of women-only platforms on leveling the playing field;

  • the mental trauma suffered by avalanche survivors;

  • and pioneering “firsts” in extreme whitewater kayaking, avalanche forecasting, mountaineering, and solo sailing.

I live in Montana. When I’m not hunched over my computer, I can often be found on adventures of my own.

I’m represented by Susan Canavan at Waxman Literary Agency.
